"What happens when one betrays the very community that shaped them?
It hurts to see people who share my cultural identity are being mercilessly killed in the United States, for no other reason than being brown. During this decade alone, the rate at which Latinos are being murdered by the police has increased by nearly 62%. Yet, their stories aren't publicized. Entire lives have been robbed from innocent people, only to be remembered in the local news (and police reports) as, 'aggressive,' and 'non-compliant.'Â
In spite of that fear for my community I carry with me, CANALLA still comes from a place of hope. I still believe that there is hope for change, and that one day, justice will prevail. In the true spirit of Salsa, I believe that we have to keep moving in stride, regardless of how bad things get. Above all else, I believe in everyone's ability to do the right thing, no matter how difficult it is.
After spending years developing this concept, I'm here today ready to introduce you to a film that's unbelievably special, incredibly entertaining, thought-provoking, and of course, groovy as all hell. I'm proud to have brought this film to life with a group of amazing artists from all different backgrounds and skillsets, and thrilled to have made a film that stands for something bigger than myself.
